I have to admit that many times, on my way to parties, I run to the market to grab a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates for the party hosts. But whenever possible, I look for ways to make the gifts a little more personal, something more than a quick stop by the store. Last Saturday, I was working on the table centerpiece for the Christmas Eve dinner gathering at my home. I thought that an Orchid Arrangement can be a beautiful hostess gift and that I should make one next time I'm invited to a party. It will, no doubt, delight every host. I know that there are many beautiful Orchid Arrangements in flower shops, but have you seen the prices?! Here's what I made for a fraction of the price!
The shopping list:
2-3 Orchids, depending on the size of the bowl (white Phalaenopsis Orchid is my favorite!)
Orchid mix for potting
Moss
Bowl
Water
Decorations (optional) ~ glittered decorations for winter, pastel for spring, pink and yellow for summer, orange and woody for fall.
Step 1: place the Orchid Mix on the bottom of the bowl.
Step 2: place the orchids inside the bowl, one at a time. You can turn them all in one direction or in the opposite direction.
Step 3: fill the empty spaces with the moss.
Step 4: water the Orchid. Since the orchid mix and the moss absorb the moisture and create a humid environment for the flower to strive. Don't overwater. Unless the weather is hot and dry, water once a week, about 1/2 - 1 cup (depending on how many Orchids you have in the bowl).
Step 5: add decorations, if desired. I dressed the leaves up a bit by adding a few glittered twigs and leaves.
